I Want Some More: The OLIVER TWIST and HANDBOOK FOR BOYS Conversation

Poor Oliver Twist.  From workhouse to forced pickpocket for Fagin and his gang of boys, author Charles Dickens put Oliver through every sordid trial the 19th Century could deliver to a child.  Dickens hoped to call attention to child labor, the recruitment of children as criminals, but also to illicit compassion for the children otherwise seen as unredeemable on London's streets.

Walter Dean Myers in his creation of the character Duke Wilson in HANDBOOK FOR BOYS is also debunking the myth that young men on the streets are unredeemable.  Part of a community mentoring program, Duke holds court in his barbershop, advising Juvie offender Jimmy on how to avoid trouble and live life responsibly.

"Please, sir, I want some more," says Oliver.  Be it gruel or advice or compassion, there characters are set on the right path by the rough kindness of others and an their own inner passion to put their world right.

And perhaps, you would like 'some more.' If you are looking for fine narration along with these fine stories,  we have it here at Sync.  Let us know what you think.
