Mary Beth - The biggest problem with ODM is that there are a limited number of mp3 audiobooks. My library doesn't have very many mp3 audiobooks at all. For a Mac user (since only mp3 format works on the Mac), this is incredibly frustrating. I…

Hi ChelleRae, It sounds like you did not complete download steps and only got the "odm" file from OverDrive. This is a file that OverDrive uses to find the actual MP3 that is the audiobook. The next steps are what download the audiobook…

I had a problem with THIS weeks's download! Last week was fine. I thought you had a week to get the books but when I tried to do open these I got the "license expired" message...

Well, at least I'm not the only one having problems! I really thought I was good to go! I downloaded it just didn't open it at the time because I was busy. :(

Did you download the OverDrive Media Console? You need that to actually get the parts of the books. If you open that there is an icon on the top that says "Transfer" and you can then transfer the book to your ipod. Worked for me!

I have to admit I really like "free" downloads that let you just download the mp3s or whatever to a file on your computer - everyone seems to have something different and different rules for how to go about it and it can really be…

That's right, unfortunately. The Media Console software sees the past expiration date and is unable to acquire a license to unlock and download the content.

Sara is correct. The ODM file has to be opened within Overdrive Media Console before the expiration date. It is only after this has happened that the book has been truly "downloaded."

It is possible that you needed to open and install the files last week while they were actually still free. That could be the license problem. I believe I saw that listed on the Sync board.

Did you download the 'Overdrive Media Console' application? This application processes the audiobook file (.odm file) and turns it into a file type that is usable on your iPod. At least, that is the way it works on a Mac.

Problems opening last week's books

I downloaded the audiobooks from last week into a folder. Well, I went to open them today to put them on my iPod and they won't open. I get Error 1003: Unable to acquire a license. Does this mean I'm not going to be able to open them ever? Not sure why it is doing that...See More

I think the reason why it isn't working is because I didn't download them completely. I just downloaded them to a folder but didn't open them with Overdrive until after the date. So it is getting a error message because the date is already over.

ChelleRae - I just went and looked at my folders again, and the ones from the OverDrive console don't make a media player skin like I said before. Not that this matters - just a point of clarification. Somebody else's free downloads do that, LOL! The OverDrive ones have something else to do with that console, but the files are still mp3 or wma and they do still play stand-alone on the Windows Media Player or iTunes or whatever. :)

Oh absolutely - once they are downloaded, if you go to the folder where they are put they are regular mp3s. But you have to have downloaded them completely first, of course. They'll work on anything that will play mp3 - uhmm, well, I think maybe some are wmas. Whatever.

It works that way on my PC too. It creates MP3s or WMAs with a Windows Media Player shell. You can play the files without the shell though, so no reason they wouldn't sync ... I actually moved the folder so it couldn't find the files, & it would download them again.
