YouTube Strategies

I think a lot of us are using YouTube as our first stop for quick pronunciation searches.  I'd love to collect other narrators' methods for ferreting out obscure pronunciations via YouTube. Here's one that I came up with when I was doing a book once that had a lot of obscure place names in Honolulu: I'd search in YouTube for "xxxx street news" and usually unearth a news broadcast about a house fire or event on the street or at the school I wanted. It was a great way to hear the local…See More

Yet Another Discussion on Throat Care

Thumbnail
The online store I use for throat sprays is Just Gotta Sing.  This is not my advertisement for the company; I just mention it because they often have interesting articles on issues of vocal hygiene, vocal abuse (doncha love that term? I wonder what my prison sentence would be?), etc. for singers and voice actors.Anyway, when I was ordering two of my favorites today -- ClearVoice and Entertainer's Secret -- I saw this interesting article on why hydration isn't always the best solution to…See More

iPads In and Out of the Studio

Thumbnail
. . . So I'm finally going to go get myself an iPad, and I'm way down at the beginning of the learning curve.  I'm wondering if iPad-savvy narrators can tell me how I use it in place of paper scripts (iBook?  does that app also let you annotate pdfs?)If anyone has recs for iPad-compatible mics and recording software so that I can use it as an on-the-road audition kit, that would be great, too.  Thanks!See More

That's great -- we'll check it out and add it to the list.   The list is about to go onto the APA Resources site and also onto a website that Judith West is creating just for it.  People can continue to contribute to it.…

Thank you so much for this, Zachary.  I just have to add my personal endorsement of those AKG headphones, as well as of channel strips in general and the PreSonus Eureka in particular.   Here are some past Green Room discussions on toys --…

No, but I'm definitely a BYOH (headphones) gal. Partly it's because I love my AKGs, but mostly -- well, you know; some studio headphones are just icky.

Good question, Nicole, especially because the technology keeps changing.   I can vouch for Arielle's set-up -- I recorded an audition in her Auralex + pillow fort when we were in NYC last week and it worked great.  (Thanks,…

Fantastic resource, Heather. I recently completed a book containing lots of fashion and home designer names, so this was useful: http://fashion.about.com/cs/designers/l/blpronounce.htm Also, Robert Blumenfeld's book "Accents: A Manual…

Found it, thanks.  Well organized list, Robin -- and I liked some of the other links on there, like how different medications affect the voice.   We have some of the main ones already, but there were some interesting new ones.  My…

We have NPR and VOA, but not AP -- thanks!   The BBC Wales site and the Wheelock's Latin site are both mostly guidelines ofgeneral pronunciation, right?  I'll add them to the list, but if anyone sites that word-specific…

I don't see any links there in your post, Robin, can you provide them?  We already have IDEA, but I haven't heard of the CIA Fact book or the wine links!     Judith West and I are going to try to get the master list (what we…

What an interesting book!  I'd probably find a back-up source for some of these, though, since a lot of pronunciations (especially Latinate ones) have changed since 1909.     Lyssa, can I copy and paste this into the other…

Thanks, Barry.  Yes, that's pretty much what I find, that it depends on publisher and editor.  I am trying to train myself to ignore mouth noises as I record (reminding myself that the editor will take care of them for me) because if…

About Me
I'm an audiobook narrator and commercial voice actress. I've narrated books for Audible, XLibris, and Blackstone Audio; and my commercial work is heard on radio, TV, and DVDs around the country. My husband is building me a new soundproof booth, which I suspect is mostly for his sanity.

My Thanksgiving Adventure: Working and Walking

It’s been a busy month for me work-wise, for which I am grateful.  Holiday advertising is in full swing, which means voiceovers — for which I am also grateful.  And I just finished narrating one book and am starting into another* — again, grateful!

But I was sure looking forward to a day off at Thanksgiving.  We’d be convening at my sister’s house in the foothills of the Oregon Coast Range.  It would be a complete change of scenery and pace, and I…

The Magic of the Studio

A recording booth is many things to me.  It’s where I earn a living, of course, but it’s more than just the gig.  It’s a place of intense concentration and creativity, a place where I work hard and love what I’m doing.  It energizes and centers me, and the hours fly. . . .   More:

Amish Romance: Behind the Mic

I’m expecting the script to arrive soon for The Survivor the third in Shelley Shepard Gray’s “Families of Honor” series, which I’ve been recording for Blackstone Audio.  (The second in the series, The Protector, was just released.)

This series was my first exposure to the Amish sub-genre of the Christian…

New Narrator Pronunciation Resource

Lively discussions in the Green Room lately on pronunciation research tips and resources (a topic that always makes narrators perk up their ears!).  Based on people's contributions, I've compiled a list of sites and ideas, and we're waiting to find a permanent home for it.  In the meantime, it's parked on my website on its own page, "Research": www.heatherannehenderson.com/research/

Oops did I say ADA, I meant The APA site, if you are a member, when you log-in there is a link of resources, one is a handy dandy Pro Tools guide pdf.  Hope that's clearer, thanks.

I just did a 1 hour test in Heather's booth I've built her. The booth is about 380 cu. ft. I had all the lights on, had my laptop with me and was working and surfing. Took a couple phone calls. I never felt uncomfortable. The temp went from about 65F to 70 F in that time. When I finally stepped out the air seemed like it had gotten a bit "stale" but that's it. I think I'm going to finish up some details and the interior sound absorbers and let Heather see if she wants more formal ventilation than just opening the door once an hour.

Thanks for all the good suggestions.
