A Handmade Life

I'm a knitter (that's when I get some of my audiobook listening done), a hopefully-soon-to-be-sewer (I finally broke out the vintage Singer I got for Christmas last weekend), a new gardener, a farmers' market shopper, and a big fan of cooking up all sorts of things in the kitchen. So when Mark Frauenfelder's new audiobook, Made by Hand, read by Kirby… Continue

Finding the Next Listen

When my monthly YA book group gets together, the question we always end up with—after we've discussed our latest read, caught up on all the other gossip, and eaten our tasty treats—is, "So, what should we read next?"

I'm loving ShelfTalker's handy round-up of kids' and YA starred reviews. Geraldine McCaughrean's The Death-Defying Pepper Roux is one that's gotten lots of stars, and once I discovered the… Continue

Listening With . . .

I have a lot of fun with AudioFile magazine's "Listening With" feature, where we interview audiobook fans who have interesting jobs and who listen to audiobooks while they're doing them. It's great to talk to other audiophiles and find out what they like to listen to, and how audiobooks improve their lives! Our most recent profile is with the proprietors of Moop—a husband and wife team who work in their Pittsburgh studio all day, six days a week,… Continue

Michael Lewis and THE BIG SHORT making the rounds

cover of The Big Short
I caught Michael Lewis talking about his big new book, The Big Short, about the financial crisis and collapse, with Terry Gross on NPR's "Fresh Air" last night--pretty crazy stuff! (One fun tidbit--Brad Pitt(!) has optioned the movie rights. How do you make a movie from a book like that? Will it be another farcical take, like Matt Damon in The Informant?) You can hear the interview here:… Continue

There's been much discussion this weekend about YA literature after a Wall Street Journal article took issue with the subject matter of a lot of modern YA books. Lisa Von Drasek has a great round-up of responses from YA authors and readers…

I'm listening to Melina Marchetta's THE PIPER'S SON, a sequel, of sorts, to SAVING FRANCESCA--love her YA work (JELLICOE ROAD was an AMAZING listen), and love the wonderful Aussie narrators who bring it to life.

After a bit of a listening hiatus, I started up with THE DEATH-DEFYING PEPPER ROUX again and finished it, and OH, what a wonderful, wonderful audiobook. I think it's really an example of text and narrator combining to make a greater whole.…

In a word, DISTURBING. Not quite his usual fare, and I spent a lot more time wincing than laughing! The narrators are all great, but the content is pretty darn dark!

Well, you've certainly opened the floodgates with this post, Jenn! A "Hobbit fix" for me quickly turns into a whole "Lord of the Rings fix". Fortunately, there are some great audio versions of Tolkein's work out…

One of my spooky favorites is The Graveyard Book—though, of course, in that case, the ghosts and werewolves and vampires are all friendly! (And there's nothing scary about Neil Gaiman's fantastic narration!)
