Hibernated from ABC through the winter, but SYNC brought me back - what do others think of Shiver? Am I the only one not crazy about Ledoux?

Xe Sands replied to Kirsten Griffith's discussion 'How do you determine YA? Is there such thing as YA "literature"?' in the group Sync: YA Listening
So while reading through blogs and articles this morning, came across this little tidbit from YA Cafe, on how to define YA literature/fiction. Made me think of this thread, and thought I would post it…

I had a Walkman before it was a walkman. I bought a used Pressman - the precursor to the Walkman, with stereo mics - around 1978 or so. It weighed as much as a brick, and headphones weren't very good back then, but I used to carry it around all…

I visited my local library the other day and the Cassette inventory was larger than CD for available audiobooks, but I don't know of anyone personally who uses cassettes on a regular basis.  You would think that those titles that were…

I listened to the King Raven trilogy by Stephen Lawhead which was set in 13th century Wales. I never would have been able to get through the books without a glossary and pronunciation table next to me, which means I never would have finished the…

Librivox was my first audio experience, as well, and I went through almost exactly the same thing. Which Iambik titles grabbed you? All My Friends are Superheroes and Like Son are on my list...

Hi, Lori! I, too, was enthralled by the audio, and have mentioned it in various threads on LibraryThing with others who have read it or are planning to, versus listening. I also wrote about it on my personal blog, and my review is featured on the…

I pick up cassette audiobooks cheap at used bookstores and save them for road trips in our old Suburban -- all it has is a tape player!

When do you listen?

Today's big chore is laundry, and not having to step away from my book to check the time left on the dryers or switch clothes from one machine to another is one of those little things that makes a big difference in how much a task feels like work.
I know many of us listen to audiobooks while driving; in what other activities do you engage while listening?

Gateway to audiobooks

Up until now, my personal experience with audiobooks has been limited - I am very particular about narration, from voice to timing to background noise/music or lack thereof, and that has put me off multiple recordings in the past - but in learning my way around ABC and AudioFile magazine, I'm shocked at myself for never having delved more deeply into this delivery method for books. I'm constantly lamenting my lack of time for reading, and yet I have all… Continue

Hi Kirsten! Thanks for the welcome to Audiobook Community...also welcome to Portland, Maine. Bought a Kindle a few years back, version 2, and still use it, but have really developed an addiction to audio books. Combining great read with a fantastic narrator and it's just a combo that's hard to beat. Just finished The Help and narration was excellent...now listening to The Ice Limit. Will have to spend more time on this site, as I'm sure I'll find great reading recommendations.

Hey Kirsten. Thanks for your condolences. Things are getting better, but much different now. I have to find more time for my father now that he's by himself. I'm getting back into the swing of things.

Hi Kirsten, how lovely to "see" and hear from you. Delighted to hear that this book is on your list. It's fascinating, and I seem to be following along with no effort, probably because my mind jumps all over the place. So absorbing, and I have the feeling of reading something "worthwhile," very edifying! I haven't read any of Ms. Woolf's novels, privately or publicly before, so this is really a treat. I suspect that "To The Light House," is probably more complex. Enjoying the process of research and discovery immensely. I have the best job in the world!
